Kamal Imani Bio
Kamal Imani is an internationally known spoken word performance poet, conscious hip hop lyricist, Television and Showcase Host and Lecturer. Kamal has toured the eastern coast of the United States. His full time profession is a teacher of children and teenagers with special needs and who are considered “at risk”. Being born in Harlem New York and raised in the Bronx New York as well as Teaneck New Jersey by a single mother, Kamal identifies with urban youth and young people who feel angry or isolated. He is also a tutor at a major tutoring company. Kamal is author of the book “You Got Next, Real Talk for the Hip Hop Generation” (Blurb.com) In Bergen County New Jersey he is considered one of the pioneers of the early hip hop movement in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. This movement taught him how to DJ, MC, Break dance and promote parties and talent showcases. It also taught him how to record music. As a teenager he had succumbed to peer pressure and the lure of the streets but was fortunate to never end up dead or in jail like several of his friends. Today Kamal remains passionate about reaching young people via lectures, spoken word poetry, hip hop and film. He has shared the stage with and opened for entertainers such as Doug E. Fresh, Cassidy, Buju Banton, MC Shan, The Last Poets and many more!
