Official Press Release for the 2008 National Black Luv Festival

BLACK L.U.V. GETS BIGGER, STRONGER AFTER 11 YEARS!
Mayor Fenty Proclaims Every 3rd Sunday in Sept., Black L.U.V. Festival Day!

Washington DC (June 4, 2008) - The National Black L.U.V. (Love Unity Vision) Festival (est. 1997) will be held September 21, 2008, Downtown at John Marshall Park [4th & Pennsylvania Ave., NW]. This festival has embraced the support of the community and the city for many years, being recognized as a 2006 Finalist in the Mayor’s Art Award for Excellence in Service to the Arts and receiving a 2007 Proclamation from DC Mayor Adrian Fenty for the 10th Anniversary proclaiming the Third Sunday in September Black L.U.V. Festival Day. “With the escalating violence in DC area communities, the rising cases of HIV/AIDS and the
suffering of the environment, NBLF is even more of a necessity.” states Kymone Freeman, Founder of NBLF.

Known for making bold statements and leaving it’s attendees with challenges that prove to make the festival goers more conscious to their surroundings and the communities that they live in, this year’s message is incorporating the challenge of: A.C.T. On the Red, Black and Green! A.C.T. stands for Accountability for your health (Red - HIV/AIDS Awareness, Diabetes, Heart Disease…), Change in our Community (Black - Community Dedication of Service….) and Take Control of your environment (Green - Global Warming, Neighborhood Clean- Up Projects…). There’s Strength in Numbers! In order to change our community and our views of each other, the growing number of attendees will continue to show our communities we are thirsty for a change.

In the past the Festival has tested more than 200 people in a single day with the continued support of Unity Health Care, Women’s Collective, Whitman Walker/Max Robinson Mobile Unit, Metro Teen AIDs, and Family
Medical Center. This year, Unity Health Care returns as a sponsor of the “Red Area” along side the testing efforts and first time involvement of DC Dept of Health. With the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in the Washington
Metropolitan Area, the Festival will continue to provide free testing for festival goers with the objective to test all attendees.

The NBLF stage has been blessed with performances by many National and Local artists, Poets and Speakers: Black Sheep (Hip Hop Legends), Amiri Baraka, Last Poets, Wayna, Jive Recording Artist Raheem DeVaughn (Grammy Nominated), Yahzarah (Three Keys Music), Marc Dorsey (Grammy Winning Songwriter), Emoni Fela, Asheru (Boondocks), and Bomani (BET’s “Read A Book”). This year’s line-up includes: Poet Sunni Patterson (Def Poetry Jam), Mambo Sauce, Farafina Kan (International Drummers) with more surprises to come!

In the 10th year, NBLF received a grant from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities which allowed then to award The NBLF Community Award to Cease Fire Don’t Smoke the Brothers and Sisters and National Activist, Brother Bey, presented by Big Tigger (WPGC/LIVE In the Den). Several organizations have committed to the Festivals’ message of empowerment and world community awareness and outreach. These organizations have made their message/voices heard during the festival - American Diabetes Association, Drug Policy Alliance, Criminal Justice Policy Foundation, Men on the Move, and Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League.

In 1997, The Black L.U.V. (love, unity & vision) Festival was established by artists in the historic U-street community devoted to social change and upliftment. This FREE one-day multi-cultural outdoor event has used the cultural arts as a vehicle to inform and enlighten communities of the Nation’s Capital. NBLF Honorary Host Committee: Congressmen Danny K. Davis, Albert Wynn, Gregory Meeks, John Lewis, Kendrick Meek & Jesse Jackson Jr. DC City Council: Hon. Marion Barry, Jim Graham & Phil Mendelson.
